Question 1038191: the ratio between two numbers is 4 to 3. The sum of the numbers is 42. what are the numbers?

let a and b represent the 2 number.
the ratio between a and b is 4/3 (first equation).
this means that a/b = 4/3.
the sum of the numbers is 42.
this means that a + b = 42 (second equation).
in the first equation, multiply both sides of the equation by b to get a = 4b/3.
in the second equation, replace a with 4b/3 to get 4b/3 + b = 42
multiply both sides of this equaiton by 3 to get 4b + 3b = 42*3.
combine like terms and simplify to get 7b = 126
divide both sides of this equaiton by 7 to get b = 18.
since a = 4b/3, then a = 4*18/3 = 4*6 = 24.
a = 24 and b = 18.
a + b = 42.
a/b = 24/18 = 4/3.
number look good so solution is confirmed to be good.
solution is that the numbers are 24 and 18.
the ratio between them is 4/3 and their sum is 42.
