Question 1014647: if 3 boys have a total of $200 between them to go to a concert the tickets cost $30 each and each boy plans to buy a t shirt for t dollars. write 2 different expressions to represent the amount of money the 3 boys will have left over

let L equal how much is left over and let T equal the price of a t-shirt.

one equation would be L = 200 - 90 - 3T

the expression for how much money is left over would be 200 - 90 - 3T

this can be simplified to 110 - 3T.

that's really the same expression after it's been simplified.

not sure if that counts as different.

another expression might be 200 - 3 * 30 - 3T

they're all just different forms of the same expression though.

so .....

200 - 90 - 3T
200 - 3 * 30 - 3T
110 - 3T

another way might be 200 - (90 + 3T)

that's different, but still just another form of the same expression.

still another would be 200 - (3 * 30 + 3T)

i would go with 200 - 90 - 3T and 110 - 3T.

they look like different expressions even though they wind up giving you the same answer.

looking at 110 - 3T separately, though, you would have no idea that it came from 200 - 90 - 3T, unless you knew up front that's where it came from.

if you look at 200 - (90 + 3T), you could figure out that another form of that equation would be 200 - 90 - 3T without knowing that the other form was 200 - 90 - 3T.

so the one that is sufficiently different from the others is 110 - 3T.

i'd go with 200 - 90 - 3T and 110 - 3T.
