a = j + 24
j+4 = (2/5)(a+4)

Substitute for "j" and solve for "a"::
a-24 + 4 = (2/5)a + (8/5)

(3/5)a = 20 8/5
(3/5)a = 160/5
3a = 160
Adam = 53 1/3 yrs = 53yrs 4mts

Adam = A
Jessie = J
A = J + 24
J = -24 + A
J + 4 = 2/5(A+4) (This is true in 4 years time)
Substituing A for J we have,

Adam was 36.
