a + b = 63 therefore a = 63 - b
a - b = 15 and given the above:
63 - b = 15 subtract 63, both sides
-b = -48 multiply both sides times -1
b = 48 and the other number is 48 + 15 = 63, just like the problem says ;-)

L=larger number; S=smaller number
L-S=15
L=S+15
L+S=63 Substitute for L
(S+15)+S=63 Subtract 15 from each side.
2S=48 Divide each side by 2.
S=24 ANSWER 1: The smaller number is 24.
L=S+15=24+15=39 ANSWER 2: The larger number is 39.
CHECK:
L-S=15
39-24=15
15=15
L+S=63
39+24=63
63=63
