Question 942243: A local hamburger shop sold a combined total of
491
hamburgers and cheeseburgers on Saturday. There were
59
fewer cheeseburgers sold than hamburgers. How many hamburgers were sold on Saturday?

Answer by macston(5194)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
H=no of hamburgers C=no of cheeseburgers
C=H-59
H+C=491 substitute above for C and solve for H
H+(H-59)=491
2H-59=491 Add 59 to each side
2H-59+59=491+59
2H=550 Divide both sides by 2
2H/2=550/2
H=275 Number of hamburgers = 275
C=275-59=216 Number of cheeseburgers=216
CHECK:
H+C=491
275+216=491
491=491
