An object is projected vertically upward with an initial velocity of Vo ft/sec, and its distance s(t) in feet above the ground after t seconds is given by the formula
s(t)=-16t^2+Vot
a) if the object hits the ground after 12 seconds, find its initial velocity.
Solve: 0 = -16*12^2 + Vo*12
------
12Vo = 16*12^2
Vo = 16*12
Vo = 152 ft/sec
==========================
B) find its maximum distance above the ground.
s(t)=-16t^2+Vot
s(t) = -16t^2 + 152t
---
Max height occurs when t = -b/(2a) = -152/(2*-16) = 4.75
Max height = s(4.75) = -16(4.75)^2 + 152(4.75) = 361 ft
