Let x=number of quarters
Then x+3=number of dimes
--Lets deal in pennies to keep life simple----
We are told that the value of the dimes 10(x+3) plus the value of the quarters 25x equals 170 (remember, we are dealing in pennies). So, our equation to solve is:
10(x+3)+25x=170 get rid of parens
10x+30+25x=170 subtract 30 from both sides
10x+30-30+25x=170-30 collect like terms
35x=140 divide both sides by 35
x=4--------------------------------------------# of quarters
x+3=4+3=7---------------------------------------# dimes

25*4+7*10=170
100+70=170
170=170
