Question 4799: Can someone please help me with this problem?
Bob sold hammers and wrenches at a flea market. He sold 4 times as many hammers as wrenches. The total sales equaled 609.00 If the sold for 3.00 apiece and the wrenches for 2.50 each how many hammers and wrenche4s did did sell?
Answer by Abbey(339) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = number of hammers sold
Let y = number of wrenches sold
the $ received for hammer sales are : $3x
the $received for wrench sales are : $2.50y
**If he sold 4 times as many hammers as wrenches, then
x=4y
We know the total sales are $609, so we can write the equation as
Total $ = Hammer $ + Wrech $:
609=3x+2.50y
by using x = 4y we can rewrite this equation as:
609=3(4y)+2.5y
Clear the parentheses and combine like terms:
609=12y+2.5y
609=14.5y
Divide both sides by 14.5 to isolate the variable:
42=y
So he sold 42 wrenches
and 4*42 = 168 hammers
this makes sense because 42*$2.5 = $105
and 168*$3=$504
and %504+$105=$609
