Question 4585: A rectangular tank is 90 cm by 700 mm by 4 m deep. Determine the number of cubic decimeters of water the tank holds. Show all work.
Answer by rapaljer(4671) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Volume = L*W*H, but you MUST have all units the same. In this case, it is best to change everything to decimeters.
On the metric line, you have
kilometers, hectometers, dekameters, meters, decimeters, centimeters, millimeters.
When you convert from one metric unit to another, you must multiply or divide by 10, 100, or 1000 (i.e., move the decimal to the left or to the right the number of places that you are converting).
As examples, converting
dm to cm, move decimal 1 place to the right;
m to mm, move decimal 3 places to the right;
cm to dm, move decimal 1 place to the left;
mm to m, move decimal 3 places to the left.
We need to convert from 90 cm to dm, so move 1 place to the left = 9.0 dm.
We need to convert from 700 mm to dm, so move 2 places to the left = 7.0 dm.
We need to convert from 4 m to dm, so move 1 place to the right = 40 dm.
Now, volume = cubic centimeters.
NOTE: In most of the world, metric system is your way of thinking. It's natural, and you have always been able to think metric. In the USA, we need to slow down and translate everything. Metric system is MUCH easier!!
