If the complement of an angle is 18° less than one-third of its supplement, find the measure of the angle.
.
Let x = the angle
then
Complement is 90-x
Supplement is 180-x
.
90-x = (1/3)(180-x) - 18
multiplying both sides by 3:
270-3x = 180-x-54
270 = 180+2x-54
90 = 2x-54
144 = 2x
72 degrees = x
