Can you advise how to solve
x-y = 60 (when x is 4 times y)

Ok well first you need to expression the equation in terms of y. We know that x is equal to 4 times y. So we can replace x with 4 times y as below:

We can then take y away from 4y to give

So we know that 3 times y is equal to 60. So y must be 20. We can find this by dividing both sides by 3 to give

So now we know y. In order to find x we can use the value for y in the original equation

So we know a number take away 20 equals 60 so x must be 80. Or another way is to to add 20 to both sides to give

Does this make any sense? Any questions?
