Tim and Mary paddled a canoe 6 miles upstream in 4 hours.The trip back took 3hours.Find the rate at which they paddled in still water??
...
distance = 6 miles
time upstream = 4 hours
..
speed upstream = 6/4 = 3/2 mph= 1.5 mph
...
speed downstream = 6/3 = 2 mph
...
(3/2+2)/2
(7/2) /2
7/2 *1/2
= 7/4
=1.75 mph speed in still water
0.25 mph = speed of current.
