A deli sells ham sandwiches for 2$ and roast beef sandwiches for 3$. a group organizing a family reunion placed orders for 85 sandwiches. The bill came to be 218$ before tax. How many ham sandwiches were ordered?

"orders for 85 sandwiches" ___ h + r = 85

"The bill came to be 218$" ___ 2h + 3r = 218

multiply the 1st equation by 2 , and subtract the result from the 2nd equation to ELIMINATE the h's

r = 218 - 170

substitute back to find h
