Question 340056: If 4 apples and 2 oranges equals $1 and 2 apples and 3 oranges equals $0.70, how much does each apple and each orange cost?
Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let a = cost of each apple
let r = cost of each orange
:
Write an equation for each statement:
:
If 4 apples and 2 oranges equals $1
4a + 2r = 1.00
;
2 apples and 3 oranges equals $0.70,
2a + 3r = .70
:
Multiply the above equation by 2, subtract the 1st equation
4a + 6r = 1.40
4a + 2r = 1.00
-----------------Subtraction eliminates a find r:
4r = .40
r = .10 for each orange
then
4a + 2r = 1.00
replace r with .10
4a + 2(.10) = 1.00
4a = 1.00 - .20
4a = .80
a = .20 for each apple
:
Check solutions in the 2nd equation
2a + 3r = .70
2(.20) + 3(.10) = .70
