SET UP A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO SITUATIONS 6/(4-X) FOR THE UP STREAM TO COVER THE 6 MILES AND 10/(4+X) FOR THE DOWNSTREAM RIDE.
THE TIME BEING EQUAL WE HAVE AN EQUATION 6/(4-X)=10/(X+4) OR CROSS MULTIPLYING
WE GET 40-10X=6X+24 OR -16X=-16 OR X=1MPH CURRENT
PROOF 6/(4-1)=6/3=2 HOURS AND 10/(4+1)=10/5 OR 2 HOURS TIME IS THE SAME WITH A 1 MPH CURRENT.
