Question 310816: I am not sure what kind of probelm this is or how to begin to solve it?? Can someone please help me? I have a collection of marbles and if I borrow 5 marbles from a friend, I can arrange marbles in rows of 13 each. What is the remainder if I divide the original number of marbles by 13? I understand that I divide but what?? How do I figure how many rows? if I subtract 5 from 13 I get 8 and if I divide that by 13 then I get .6, is this what the problem is asking me for?
Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The problem is saying that at the beginning you were trying to arrange the marbles you had into rows containing 13 each. You couldn't complete the task until you borrowed 5 marbles from your friend. That means before you borrowed any marbles, you had some number of rows of 13 marbles (and you don't care how many) plus one row that only had 13 minus 5 equals 8 marbles in it. So, if you had taken the number of marbles that you had to start with and divided that number by 13, you would have gotten a quotient equal to the number of full rows of 13 marbles that you started with plus 8 for a remainder.
