Question 29977: A 555 mile trip that took 5 hours was flown at two speeds. For the first part of the trip, average speed was 105 mph. Then the tailwind picked up, and the remainder of the trip was flown at an average speed of 115 mph. For how long did the plane fly at each speed?
Answer by Paul(988)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
SInce 5 hours is the highest the speed flown at each speed will be y=5-x
Let the first speed be x for the 105mph
Let the second speed be y for the 115mph.
Equation:

105x+115y=555
Subsitute:
105x+115(5-x)=555
105x-115x=555-575
-10x=-20
x=2

Hence, the plane flew for 2 hours at 105mph and for 3 hours at 115mph.
