Question 282675: the perimeter of a cross section or the end of a "two by four" piece of lumber is 10 in. The length is two in. more than the width. Find the actual dimension of the cross section of a "two by four"

The formula for the circumference/perimeter is:
2L + 2W = 10
Remember that L = W + 2

Substitute the value of L for L
2(W + 2) + 2W = 10

Expand:
2W + 4 + 2W = 10

Combine like terms:
4W + 4 = 10

Subtract 4 from each side:
(4W + 4) - 4 = 10 - 4

4W = 6

Divide each side by 4:
4W / 4 = 6 / 4

W = 1 1/2
L = 1 1/2 + 2 = 3 1/2

Width = 1 1/2", Length = 3 1/2" and bob's your uncle!
