The obvious answer is $5.00 but at the bottom of the page it says Hint: The answer is not $5. Every time we set the problem up, we get $5.00.

The bottle cost $30.00 than the cork.
Let the x represent the cork.
x+30 represent the bottle.
Add them together.
x+x+30=35
2x=5
x=2.5
Hence, the cost of the cork is $2.5.
