You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Steps to solve word problems:
.
1. list the item of what we are dealing with. In this case: orange juice, cranberry juice, and ginger ale.
2. determine what is being compared to what. In other words, most items will depend on one of the three.
3. the problem tells us we need two times OJ than Cranberry.
4. it also tells us we need eight times ginger ale than Cranberry.
5. So, let: Cranberry = x, Orange Juice = 2x, and Ginger Ale = 8x
Does that make sense?
6. Now, the problem also tells us we plan to make 165oz of the punch.
So we can say: x%2B2x%2B8x=165
.
Now solve for x... this will give you how much Cranberry Juice Alisha will need.
Use this figure to determine 2x and 8x for the other ingredients.
.
Done! :)

The recipe requires twice as much orange juice as cranberry juice and 8 times as much ginger ale as cranberry juice.
If she plans to make 165oz of punch,how much orange juice does she need?
:
Let x = amt of cranberry juice required
:
It said,"Twice as much orange juice as cranberry juice." therefore
2x = amt of orange juice
:
It also said,"8 times as much ginger ale as cranberry juice" therefore
8x = amt of ginger ale
:
Find x using the total amt:
x + 2x + 8x = 165
11x = 165
x = 165%2F11
x = 15 oz of cranberry juice
and
2(15) = 30 oz of orange juice which is what the asked for
;
:
To check our solution, find the amt of ginger ale
8(15) = 120 oz of ginger ale
:
15 + 30 + 120 = 165 oz
;
That was not too difficult, was it?
