You can put this solution on YOUR website!

x = amount of milk bars Mark bought at first
x-5 = the amount left after he eats 5 milk bars

(x-5)/3 = divide the previous result into 3 equal shares.

Mary gets one share plus 6 more milk bars
So she gets the (x-5)/3 plus another 6
I.e. (x-5)/3 + 6

Set this equal to 14 and isolate x
(x-5)/3 + 6 = 14
(x-5)/3 = 14-6
(x-5)/3 = 8
x-5 = 3*8
x-5 = 24
x = 24+5
x = 29

Mark started with 29 bars.
He eats 5 of them, so he has 29-5 = 24 left
That 24 is split 3 equal ways to get 24/3 = 8 bars per share.
Mary gets 8 bars plus another 6 to get 8+6 = 14.
We have confirmed the answer.

Answer: 29 milk bars.

The other tutor misread the problem. The 14 milk bars is the number Mark was left with -- not the number he gave to Mary.

x = original number of milk bars
x-5 = number after he ate 5
(x-5)/3 = one share
(x-5)/3+6 = number he gave to Mary

The number he is left with (14) is the original number, minus the 5 he ate, minus the number he gave to Mary:

14+=+x-5-%28%28x-5%29%2F3%2B6%29
14+=+%282%2F3%29%28x-5%29-6
%282%2F3%29%28x-5%29=20
x-5=30
x=35

ANSWER: He started with 35 milk bars

CHECK:
start with 35; eat 5; 30 left
30 divided into 3 equal shares is 10 for each share
number he gave to Mary was one share (10) plus 6 more = 16
number he has left at the end: 30-16 = 14

After reading your post,  I have a question:

            Is  Mark   " he "   or   " she " ?

If  Mark is  " he ",  then   WHO  IS   " she "  at the first appearance of this word in the post ?

And since I asked,  who is  " she "  at the first appearance,  it is logical to ask,  who is  " she "  at the second appearance ?

            Without clarifying these fundamental issues,  the problem cannot be solved.

The  " problems "  formulated so carelessly,
are good only to throw them to the closest garbage bin.

Waste of time.
