In a class of 40 students, 23 are studying Japanese,18 are studying Korean and 10 are studying
both Japanese and Korean. How many students are not taking any foreign language.

The number of students who study at least one of these two languages is 


    23 + 18 - 10 = 31.


I subtracted "10" from the sum of 23 and 18, because in this sum I counted twice those who study both languages.


Hence, the number of those in the class who does not take any of these two foreign languages is 40 - 31 = 9.


Answer.  9 students in the class do not take any of these two foreign languages.
