Call the numbers x and y. Then we have
2x - y = -2 and
x + 4y = 35
Solve the second one for x and substitute it into the first equation and get
x = -4y + 35 and then
2(-4y + 35) - y = -2
-8y + 70 - y = -2
-9y + 70 = -2
-9y = -72
y = 8
and then
x = -4(8) + 35 = 3
