d = number of dimes
q = number of quarters

10d + 25q = 495
d = 3q

30q + 25q = 495
55q = 495
q = 9

---> 27 dimes, 9 quarters

In English, the phrase "there are 3 times more dimes than quarters" means

    d = 4q.

So, you better NEVER use such and similar passages when you formulate Math problems.

Use "there are 3 times as many dimes as quarters", which is equivalent to

    d = 3q.
