Answer by macston(5194)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
J=number of Joan's coins; C=number of Carrie's coins=J+40
$0.10J=$0.05C
$0.10J=$0.05(J+40)
$0.10J=$0.05J+$2.00
$0.05J=$2.00
J=40
ANSWER 1: Joan has 40 dimes.
.
C=J+40=40+40=80
ANSWER 2: Carrie has 80 nickels.
.
CHECK:
$0.10J=$0.05C
$0.10(40)=$0.05(80)
$4.00=$4.00
