Question 992580: I have been trying to solve this problem for the last hour, but whatever I try I cannot find the answer.
The question is
Eddie has $0.95 in dimes and nickles. The total number of coins is one more than twice the number of dimes. How many coins of each type are there? (Solve only using one variable)
I tried
Let dimes=0.95-0.10d
Let nickles= 0.05d
Let number of coins= 2d+1
And the equation 2d+1=0.95-0.1+0.05d
That did not find the right answer, and I have no idea what to do now.
Please help.
Answer by macston(5194) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
D=number of dimes; Total coins=2D+1; Number of nickels=2D+1-D=D+1
.
$0.05(D+1)+$0.10D=$0.95
$0.05D+$0.05+$0.10D=$0.95
$0.15D=$0.90
D=6
ANSWER 1: There are 6 dimes.
Number of nickels=D+1=6+1=7
ANSWER 2: There are 7 nickels.
