Question 990102: Nathan has three times as many dimes as he does quarters. He has five less than twice as many nickels as he has dimes. The total amount of money he has is $6.55. How many of each coin does Nathan have?
Answer by CubeyThePenguin(3113)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
n = number of nickels
d = number of dimes
q = number of quarters

d = 3q
n = 2d - 5 = 6q - 5
5n + 10d + 25q = 655

Write everything in terms of q.

5(6q - 5) + 10(3q) + 25q = 655
30q - 25 + 30q + 25q = 655
85q = 680
q = 8 ---> d = 24

---> 43 nickels, 24 dimes, 8 quarters
