Kevin is 4 times as old as Michael
K = 4M
Kevin is also 9 years older than Michael.
K = 9 + M
Replace K with 4M
4M = 9 + M
Collect like terms
4M - M = 9
3M = 9
M = 3
Kevin is 12 years old.
