Without the "5 more" nickels, he has pairs of nickels and dimes worth $1.50.
Each pair is 15 cents.
150/15 = 10 pairs.
--> 10 dimes & 15 nickels

$0.05N+$0.10D=$1.75 Sub for N from above.
$0.05(D+5)+$0.10D=$1.75
$0.05D+$0.25+$0.10D=$1.75 Subtract $0.25 from each side.
$0.15D=$1.50 Divide each side by $0.15.
D=10
ANSWER 1: He had 10 dimes.
