A sum of money is made up of an equal number of 10c and 50c pieces. When the number of 50c pieces is increased by 12 and the number of 10c pieces is halved, the sum of money is increased by $4.50. Find the original sum of money.

A sum of money is made up of an equal number of 10c and 50c pieces. When the number of 50c pieces is increased by 12 and the number of 10c pieces is halved, the sum of money is increased by $4.50. Find the original sum of money.

d = h
10d + 50h = sum cents
(1/2)10d + (50(h+12)) = sum + 450 cents
---
Substitute for "sum" and solve for "d" and "h"::
5d + 50h + 600 = 10d + 50h + 450
----
5d = 150
d = 30 (# of 10c pieces)
----
Solve for "h"::
h = 30 (# of 50c pieces)
