Q=quarters; N=nickels=2Q+2
$0.25Q+$0.05N=$6.05 Substitute for N.
$0.25Q+$0.05(2Q+2)=$6.05
$0.25Q+$0.10Q+$0.10=$6.05 Subtract $0.10 from each side.
$0.35Q=$5.95 Divide each side by $0.35
Q=17 ANSWER 1: There are 17 quarters.
N=2Q+2=2(17)+2=34+2=36 ANSWER 2: There are 36 nickels.
CHECK:
$0.25Q+$0.05N=$6.05
$0.25(17)+$0.05(36)=$6.05
$4.25+$1.80=$6.05
