Question 954392: Reggie's younger brother had several coins when he returned from his paper route. He has a total of $5.35 in dimes and quarters. He had six more quarters than he had dimes. How many of each coin did he have?
Answer by macston(5194) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
D=dimes; Q=quarters=D+6
$0.10D+$0.25Q=$5.35 Substitute for Q.
$0.10D+$0.25(D+6)=$5.35
$0.10D+$0.25D+$1.50=$5.35 Subtract $1.50 from each side.
$0.35D=$3.85 Divide each side by $0.35
D=11 ANSWER 1: He had 11 dimes
Q=D+5=11+6=17 ANSWER 2: He had 17 quarters.
CHECK:
$0.10D+$0.25Q=$5.35
$0.10(11)+$0.25(17)=$5.35
$1.10+$4.25=$5.35
$5.35=$5.35
