$0.10d+$0.05n=$12 (multiply number of coins by value of coins to get amount)Substitute for n.
$0.10d+$0.05(3d)=$12
$0.10d+$0.15d=$12
$0.25d=$12 Divide each side by $0.25.
d=48 ANSWER: There were 48 dimes.
3d=3(48)=144 There were 144 nickels.
CHECK:
$0.10(48)+$0.05(144)=$12
$4.80+$7.20=$12
$12=$12
