Question 950239: Manny has $2.30 in dimes and quarters. The total number of coins is 2 less than twice the number of dimes. How many of each denomination does he have?
Answer by macston(5194)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
d= no. of dimes; q= no of quarters
q=(2d-2)-d=(d-2)
$0.10d+$0.25q=$2.30 Substitute for q
$0.10d+$0.25(d-2)=$2.30
$0.10d+$0.25d-$0.50=$2.30 Add $0.50 to each side.
$0.35d=$2.80 Divide each side by $0.35
d=8 ANSWER 1: There were 8 dimes.
q=d-2=8-2=6 ANSWER 2: There were 6 quarters
CHECK:
$0.10d+$0.25q=$2.30
$0.10(8)+$0.25(6)=$2.30
$0.80+$1.50=$2.30
$2.30=$2.30
