Answer by macston(5194)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Q=number of quarters; N=number of nickels; N=Q+40
$0.25Q+$0.05N=$5.00 Substitute for N
$0.25Q+$0.05(Q+40)=$5.00
$0.25Q+$0.05Q+$2.00=$5.00 Subtract $2.00 from each side
$0.30Q=$3.00 Divide each side by $0.30
Q=10 ANSWER 1: There were 10 quarters.
N=Q+40=10+40=50 ANSWER 2: There were 50 nickels.
CHECK
$0.25(10)+$0.05(50)=$5.00
$2.50+$2.50=$5.00
$5.00=$5.00
