Question 927397: Michelle has $14 in her purse in 5c, 10c and 20c. If she has an equal number of each coin type, how many coins does Michelle have in her purse?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you want to convert everything to cents so you are working with the same units throughout the problem.
$14.00 is equal to 1400 cents.
if you let x represent the number of coins of each type, then your equation becomes:
5x + 10x + 20x = 1400
combine like terms to get:
35x = 1400
divide both sides of this equation by 35 to get:
x = 40
you have 40 coins of each type.
40*5 = 200
40*10 = 400
40*20 = 800
add them up and you get 1400 cents which is equivalent to $14.00
