Consider quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies
You can't have 5 quarters, since that would
equal $1.25
4 quarters = $1.00
coins are left
-----------------------------
8 nickels = 40 cents which is too much money
5 pennies and 3 dimes = 35 cents- still too much
5 pennies and 3 nickels = 20 cents- exactly right
-----------------------------
So, the answer is:
4 quarters
5 pennies
3 nickels
12 coins = $1.20
------------
What about 2 quarters and 7 dimes?
That's only 9 coins
2 quarters, 4 nickels, 5 dimes
That's 11 coins
2 quarters
6 nickels
4 dimes
That's 12 coins = $1.20
-----------------------
What about 1 quarter and 11 nickels?
That's 80 cents
1 quarter, 2 dimes, 9 nickels
That's 90 cents
1 quarter, 4 dimes 7 nickels
That's $1.00
1 quarter
6 dimes
5 nickels
That's only $1.10
-------------
What about:
1 quarter
8 dimes
3 nickels
That's $1.20
-------------
That's 3 ways
