Dimes are worth 3x as much as quarters? In which currency is this? The value is not really relevant in this problem, but it's weird.
D + Q = 12
Q = 3D
Substitute the number of quarters from the bottom equation into the top.
D+Q =12
D + (3D) = 12
4D = 12
D = 3
You have 3 dimes. If you have 3x as many quarters, then you have 9 quarters for a total of 3+9=12 coins.
