Question 897206: Lindsey has fifty coins in her change purse that are either dimes or quarters. If y represents the number of quarters she has, write an algebraic expression in terms of y that describes the number of dimes.
Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
y = number of quarters
If x = number of dimes, and if we have 50 coins (either quarters or dimes), then
x+y = 50
solve for y to get x = 50 - y (notice how I subtracted y from both sides to isolate x)
So there are 50 - y dimes if there are y quarters.
