Question 886136: I need help with this summer problem, thank you.
A coin bank contains a total of 24 nickels, dimes, and quarters, with a total value of $2.90. If there are three times as many dimes as there are nickels and quarters combined, how many of each kind of coin are there?

Answer by JulietG(1812)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If there are 24 coins and there are 3x as many dimes as the rest, the only possibility of distribution is 6 of the rest and 18 dimes.
18 dimes = $1.80
The total = $2.90
$2.90 - $1.80 = $1.10
What combination of quarters and nickels is equal to $1.10?
The maximum number of quarters cannot be more than four (a dollar).
4 quarters, 2 nickels = $1.10 (6 coins)
Combination: 4 quarters, 18 dimes, 2 nickels
