Let x represent the number of Quarters ⇒ (35-x) represents the number of Nickels   

Question States*** total is $3.95

CENTS makes sense

 25x +  5(35-x) = 395 cents

      20x = 395- 175

      20x = 220

        x = 11, the number of Quarters. 24 Nickels

CHECKING our answer***

 25*11 + 5*24 = 395  Or $3.95
