The bank has a large display of pennies and nickels . The value of the coins are 24 dollars.

Having no information as to the number of pennies and nickels, one can only

assume there are an equal number  of each of them:

CENTS makes sense:

  x + 5x = 2400¢

   6x = 2400

    x = 400   (400 pennies and 400 nickels)

400¢ + 2000¢ = 2400¢  0r $24.00
