Question 836205: a collection of 10 nickels and dimes is worth $0.80. Find the number of nickels and dimes.

Answer by LinnW(1048)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
n = no of nickles
d = no of dimes
n + d = 10
add -d to each side
n = 10 - d
n(5) + d(10) = 80 cents
substitute (10 - d) for n
(10 - d)(5) + d(10) = 80
50 - 5d + 10d = 80
50 + 5d = 80
add -50 to each side
5d = 30
d = 6
Since there are 10 coins all together n = 4
60 cents is dimes and 20 cents in nickles
