The ages of A and B are in the ratio 4:3. in eight years time the ratio of their ages will be 9:7. find their present ages. if n years ago, A was three times as old as B, find the value of n.
-------------------
Now DATA:
A is 4x ; B is 3x
----
8 years from now DATA:
A is 4x+8 ; B is 3x+8
--------
Equations:
4x+8 = 9k
3x+8 = 7k
------------
Rearrange:
4x - 9k = -8
3x - 7k = -8
----------
Modify for elimination:
12x - 27k = -24
12x - 28k = -32
------
Subtract and solve for "k":
k = 8
---
Solve for "x":
4x + 8 = 9k
4x = 72-8
4x = 64
x = 16
------
A = 4x = 64 years old
B = 3x = 48 years old
