Question 799889: You've just opened your piggy bank to discover 55 coins totaling $10.00. If there are more nickles than pennies, more dimes than nickles and more quarters than dimes, how many of each coin do you have?
Answer by josmiceli(19441) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
In order of the most to the least, you have:
Q
D
N
P
You can have 5 pennies or 10 pennies
Suppose
Q = ?
D = 1
N = 1
P = 5
-------
Now I need to put the amounts in descending order
Q = ?
D = 7
N = 6
P = 5
D + N + P = 18 and that amount is $1.05
Add 2 more dimes, and I get $1.25, or 5 quarters
Now I have:
Q = 1000/25 - 5 = 35
D = 9
N = 6
P = 5
--------
Total coins is 55, and
P*1 = 5
N*5 = 30
D*10 = 90
Q*35 = 875
-----------
1000 cents total or $10.00
Hope this makes sense
