Question 763364: Tom has 29 coins made up of 25 cent pieces and 10 cent pieces. The sum of money he has is $5.45. How many of each coin does he have?
Answer by Cromlix(4381)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = 25c pieces
y = 10c pieces
x + y = 29...1
25x + 10y = 545...2
Multiply (1) by 25
25x + 25y = 725...3
25x + 10y = 545...2
Subtract (2) from (3)
15y = 180
y = 12
Substitute y = 12 into (1)
x + y = 29
x + 12 = 29
x = 17
Therefore Tom has 17 x 25c pieces
and 12 x 10c pieces.
Hope this helps.
