Question 758075: I have 34 coins that are dimes and nickles and equal $2.50. how many nickles do I have?
Answer by Cromlix(4381) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = dime
y = nickel
x + y = 34.......1
10x + 5y = 250.....2
Multiply (1) by 5
5x + 5y = 170 ......3
10x + 5y = 250......2
Subtract (3) from (2)
5x = 80
x = 16.
Substitute x = 16 in (10
x + y = 34
16 + y = 34
y = 34 - 16
y = 18
Therefore we have 16 dimes
and 18 nickels
Hope this helps.
