Let us assume that stevens had x nos of quarters So Nos.of Nickels he owns are 2*x+9

as 1 nickel=0.05 $ & I quarter=0.25 $
Total value in $ is 0.25*x+(2*x+9)*.05 But he had total $ 5.35

5.35=0.25*x+(2*x+9)*.05
5.35=0.25x+2*x*(.05)+9*(.05)
5.35=0.35*x+0.45
5.35-0.45=0.35x
4.9=0.35*x
4.9/0.35=x
14=x
So stevens has 14 nos quarters & (14*2+9) i.e.37 nos ov nickel

14*0.25+37*0.05=5.35
