Let q = no. quarters

Two equations
2c + q = 9
q = (9-2c)
and
.05c + .10c + .25q = 1.20
.15c + .25q = 1.20
replace q with (9-2c)
.15c + .25(9-2c) = 1.20
.15c + 2.25 - .50c = 1.20
.15c - .50c = 1.20 - 2.25
-.35c = -1.05
c = -1.05/-.35c
c = + 3 nickels and 3 dimes
