Question 701315: Write a linear system that models the situation and solve.
During a football game, students sell bags of popcorn for $2.50 each and drinks for $2 each. The students collect $336 in sales. They sell twice as many bags of popcorn as drinks. How many bags of popcorn do they sell?
Answer by neatmath(302) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let p be the number of bags of popcorn sold.
Let d be the number of drinks sold.
Then we have:
given
given
We can then use substitution to solve, using the value of p in the second equation in the first equation:
Then just plug this value for d into the second equation:
So the students sold 96 bags of popcorn (and 48 drinks).
Check it, and it should work!
